Alpha Kappa Alpha (ΆΚΆ) is the first Greek-lettered sorority established and incorporated by African American college women. The sorority was founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. by a group of nine students, led by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle. Forming a sorority broke barriers for African-American women in areas where little power or authority existed due to a lack of opportunities for minorities and women in the early twentieth century. Alpha Kappa Alpha was incorporated on January 29, 1913. Consisting of college-educated women of African, Caucasian, Asian, and Hispanic descent, the sorority serves through a membership of more than 200,000 women in over 975 chapters in the United States and several other countries. Women may join through undergraduate chapters at a college or university, or through a graduate chapter after acquiring a college degree. Courtesy of Wikipedia.

Classes start Monday at Lyle Academy

A charter school that has been entangled in controversy for the past year is now trying to get the word out to its students that—despite rumors to the contrary — it is opening again this school year. Leaders at Ethel Hedgeman Lyle Academy fought earlier this year to terminate their contract with the school's management company, Virginia-based Imagine Schools. The charter school's sponsor, Missouri Baptist University, then threatened to close Lyle before coming to a one-year agreement with the school this summer. But Lyle leaders recently said school closure rumors have persisted, despite attempts to contact families of last year's students. Leaders are now announcing, again, that classes will begin on Monday.Parents may enroll elementary students at 1509 Washington Avenue, middle or high school students at 1881 Pine Street, or call 314-621-0402 for more information. This will be the first year the school board will be run the academy by itself. EHLA opens this fall as an independent charter school dedicated to excellence in education

Job and Enrollment Fair are just the beginning

Starting this fall Ethel Hedgeman Lyle Academy will open under its own auspices as independent charter school dedicated to high academic achievement through a new, vogue, and innovated curriculum designed to encompass the not just student’s involvement but parents as well as community investments.

ST. LOUIS – Working in partnership with other local, as well as national, educational task forces, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle Academy (EHLA) will be taking a bold step in securing the academic nurturing of St. Louis' students. Many of the these changes were brought about because of the separation of Imagine Schools and EHLA’s difference of opinion regarding the growth and health of its student body, and focus on education.

EHLA's commitment to ensure that students are given the best education possible to succeed in an already competitive world versus a culture of low functioning academics and mundane curriculum was the thrust that began the disjuncture. Coupled with the ideology that technological advances ie. computers, media players, and such, however important as they can be, cannot be used to replace teacher-guided instruction without effectively bridging the use of these advances in regard to learning.

As a separate and distinct entity, this fall, EHLA will have new leadership for both of its schools and a new superintendent of its school's system. Flourishing as one of St. Louis premier charter schools, EHLA will be an academic institution providing all necessary educational services and support. Backing these changes will be Missouri Baptist University, further co-signing that an urban education does not mean that a lack resources, incompetent educators, and poor leadership which should never be the norm for not just urban schools but for any school.

To hallmark this shifting of gears will be a career fair Saturday July 26, 2008 from 9am to 1pm at the EHLA 1881 Pine Street. St. Louis MO 63103. There will also be a chance for all attendees to view the campus and even enroll their child for classes.

"Children first, parents and community second and EHLA third. 'Aspiring Excellence and Building Bright Futures'“ is the Academy's motto. If you are weighing what options are available in sending your child to a school who not only cares about meeting educational standards but also preparing your son/daughter for scholarship and possibilities, staff is available daily to answer questions and enroll your student(s) at EHLA Central Office located 1881 Pine Street St. Louis MO 63103. Parents will become versed in everything from the curriculum to bus transportation, provided by First Student Busing.
